Weather Alert – U.S. Embassy, Barbados (September 6, 2023)

Location:  Eastern Caribbean Islands

Event:  According to reports from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Tropical Storm Lee is forecast to become a major hurricane by this weekend and could impact the Leeward Islands by that time. The NHC reports that while it is too soon to determine the location and magnitude of these possible impacts, interests in this area should monitor the progress of the depression and further updates to the forecast.

Swells generated by Lee are expected to reach portions of the Lesser Antilles on Friday.  These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Action to Take:

  • Monitor local media and the National Hurricane Center website (www.nhc.noaa.gov) for updates and the latest forecast.
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
  • Review local and regional emergency management organizations for information on emergency preparedness, including the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA)
  • Seek secure shelter if weather conditions deteriorate.
